Chapter Nine

He had dropped them both off, revving his Mustang’s engine in front of the restaurant like a bull in heat.

He’d asked Hope the whole way if she enjoyed his ride, and Maddi tried not to say anything, but he really needed to watch his wording. If he had been any other man, she would have said there was a subtle, sexual innuendo in his constant comments about the power under the Mustang’s hood.

She knew he would never try anything with another woman, let alone her little sis, but it still made her uncomfortable. Thankfully, Hope had just smiled and ignored him. Maybe it was the snow in the air that was making everyone act so foolish, she thought to herself.

It sure was a pretty sight to see. Standing out on the sidewalk, she and Hope stared up at the gray sky, watching the swirling mix of white flakes dance their way to Earth. It was getting heavier by the second, and already there was a layer of snow on the ground. Maddi reached over and held her little sis’s hand and wished that it could be like this between them all the time.

Hope might say she didn’t blame her for the way things fell out, and the fact that they didn’t live together, but Maddi felt a pang in her heart every time she thought of it. If only things were different. If only she didn’t live in Blue Sky. If only she didn’t live with Carter. She did, however, and it was the way she wanted it to be. The only thing she would want to change is how Hope lived somewhere else. She promised herself that after the squirt had graduated high school, she would find a way to bring her here, just like she promised. That might make things difficult between her and this boy she liked, with the whole long-distance relationship thing, but they could talk about that, too.

A quick phone call with Carter ended with him griping about having to go out again tonight and a few snide comments about how Maddi should start planning ahead better, but at least he said he would come get them. Happy that they would have a safe way home, she put the phone away.

“Come on, kiddo,” Maddi said, wrapping her arm around Hope’s shoulders. “Why don’t we take a walk around the block until our ride gets here. I want to see what this town looks like in the snow.”

“Great idea,” her little sis said enthusiastically. “I’ll take some pics to send back to the grandparents. They’ll be mad they’re missing this. This is very cool. You might even call it epic.”

Maddi laughed at their inside joke. “Epic, huh? Even for a grown-up teen like yourself?”

“Pfft.” Hope made a noise with her lips pressed together. “I might be eighteen but I’m still a little kid at heart. And it’s snowing! How often do I get to see snow in this part of the world?”

“Glad to hear that you aren’t too old for it.
